Greetings, my people—
Welcome to the first edition of Ask Me Anything, where I answer your real questions—no filters, no fluff. This is an exclusive space for those of you who hold the vibes close and ride this journey with me. Each month, I’ll pick a few questions sent in by members and answer them right here on the blog. Let’s build.
Q1: What inspired you to write “Black Gold”?
That song came straight from the soil—literally and metaphorically. I wanted to bring attention to what’s happening in Guyana right now with the oil boom. But beyond the politics, Black Gold is a tribute to our worth, our culture, and our unmined potential as people of African descent and Caribbean roots. It’s a reminder that we are the resource, not just the land we stand on.
Q2: Do you ever get nervous before performing?
Absolutely. I’m human. But it’s not fear—it’s anticipation. I’ve learned to channel those nerves into energy. Before I touch the stage, I center myself. Sometimes I do breathwork or a quick moment of stillness. And when Rastaman Philosophy drops as the opener? That’s when the nerves disappear, and the music takes over.
Q3: How do you balance making conscious music with creating something people can dance to?
Balance is the key. I don’t believe in sacrificing depth for catchiness. The rhythm can move your hips, but the lyrics need to move your spirit too. So whether it’s a slow jam like My Love, I’m Here or a charged anthem like Stand Tall, I make sure the message still resonates—even if you’re winding your waistline.
Q4: What advice would you give to someone who wants to start making music later in life?
Start where you are. Don’t let age or timing make you second guess yourself. I recorded my debut album Defined Versatility while still serving in the Air Force. And now, I’m building something even deeper in retirement. The only thing that matters is your intention. Bring truth, bring passion, and stay consistent.
Q5: Will there ever be a song about your life in Bachelors Adventure?
That’s in the works. In fact, I’m thinking of naming the next album Bachelors Adventure—but I’ve been sitting with it because the title could throw people off if they don’t know the village. Still, that chapter of my life shaped me, and it’s time I give it the proper storytelling it deserves.
Much love to everyone who sent in questions—if yours didn’t get answered this time, hold tight. I’ll be doing this monthly, so keep them coming. You can send your questions through the member portal or DM me directly if you’re part of the inner circle.
Until next time—stay conscious, stay creative, and keep moving to the rhythm of your own truth.
